The wanton desire by most companies to convert interns and national service personnel into errand boys and girls is a growing trend in Ghana which broadcaster Nana Aba Anamoah disapproves of.
According to her, the main reason why these interns and NSS personnel are posted to these companies is to serve, learn and develop their skills thus anything outside of that is a no-brainer.
Speaking in an exclusive interview, Nana Aba Anamoah said she has observed the trend where interns and NSS personnel are sent on long errands to buy “waakye” and delegated other mundane roles which do not have a direct link to what they have been posted to these companies to do.
She maintained that Ghanaian companies must stop ‘using’ interns and NSS personnel for the sake of it. Nana Aba Anamoah intimated that it is high the trend was stopped and companies put in the right structures that equip interns and NSS personnel with requisite skills and knowledge; setting them up for career success.
Anything outside of that like the buying of waakye (instances, where these interns are given a long list to buy waakye, return late and in most situations, are not given some of the food. They are subsequently tasked to return the bowls, buy water and bring back the change), Nana Aba Anamoah believes must not be tolerated.
In Ghana, interns are seen as educated labourers who are forced by their superiors to take up duties that have no bearing on what they are there to do. Since these individuals are young, exuberant and fresh, most companies convert them into menial workers by sending them on unending errands and giving them contoured tasks. Do these interns have a choice? No, their hands are tied up.
“The fact that the old laboured during their time to make it to wherever they now do not mean those coming up need to suffer as they did. I have a challenge with media houses, we do not give enough opportunities to young people. An intern who has been posted is sent on ‘waakye” buying duties until he or she is fed up,” she said.
